The post office has a place where someone can do their own postcards and mail right from one site.
Limited options - you can do 6.25 x 9 or 6.25 x 11 postcards. Stock is 10pt Coated Cover, 4/4 with bleed and UV coating. (2 flyer sizes too but no other postcard sizes.)
You CAN edit text/upload images right from the site - they accept .jpg and .tiff files.
You select carrier routes & everything, they come up with a quote and that's all you hve to do - they print and mail for you complete with all the EDDM info. You don't have to take it to the post office yourself. From the time you place the order, they say recipients will get it in 6 to 10 days.
Price to do 10,046 6.25 x 9 cards was $2310.58 total.
Here is their pricing page:

SOOOOO... how are we different/better? Whether or not a business person is interested in the postcard mailer, do we make it cheaper/easier to go through us than the USPS?

They would still have to fork up about $2,300 and with us, its handsoff too. Some might go for it but what do they know about a catchy offer, the right design and to include a coupon? I say, don't worry,

Here's a blog post from a company that is trying to sell EDDM services to clients:
http://www.imagemedia.com/blog/2012/02/ ... bout-eddm/ (http://www.imagemedia.com/blog/2012/02/five-things-you-need-to-know-about-eddm/)
http://www.imagemedia.com/blog/2012/01/ ... with-eddm/ (http://www.imagemedia.com/blog/2012/01/no-more-mailing-lists-with-eddm/)
I think they make some good points that we can use if we're touting ourselves as EDDM experts.
I thought about putting a small ad on my postcard about it but have been trying to figure out what to say. COULD just try to get someone to call me by saying something like:
"Confused about that new EDDM Program from the Post Office? The one that allows you to send direct mail for as little as 14.5cents per piece? Call xxxxxxx for details, and to use EDDM savings on YOUR mailings!"

14.5 cents for postage, yes. Pick ANY random online printer and how much additionally is that going to cost them? I do agree though about promoting it because it is only to your advantage

Diana you answered your own question in the first post....
$2300 buys you 10k 6x9" postcards.
We are the one and only KING of massive 12x9" postcards baby! Its all about 100% visibility :)

That's good, yes - but I also want to attract people who just like the idea of EDDM but who aren't necessarily interested in our postcard mailers.
They still have to design & print the piece. Yes you can do it on that site but it's limited - and you STILL need an image to upload and you need to know what to say.
That site doesn't say anything about little tricks like sorting carrier routes by average income or home value...
That site doesn't give you all the size options.
On some sites you can create the pieces - but they mail to YOU and you still have to take it to the post office.
So I'd like to be able to say - in a small ad - that if they're hearing about this cool program from the post office, that they ought to contact me.

Maybe we should talk to the local postoffice, all of us and see if they would be willing to refer us? YOU could pay to have 1,000 biz cards with your contact info on, marketing YOU as the EDDM expert/consultant and for them to recieive your card from the postal worker. If you can sell them on the idea that they will lose so much biz because small biz owners do not have the right knowledge, nor the time, to create their own card?

I wouldn't just barge in and ask to see whoever is in charge of the program. I would do some research first, i.e. call and find out who is in charge, then ask for an appointment without revealing the whole thing over the phone. Simply just say that you might have a way for them to profit even more from the EDDM program but to fully explain what it is, you would need at least a 15 minute appointment.
I would also call a post office OUTSIDE your area and try to be "shummy" to find out if there's some internal recognition for products sold. Yea,I know, its the post office but you never know... If a Post Master in one area have done way better than other areas, do they get a promotion, a mentioning in an internal newsletter or is it all just the same? Try to find out what makes them tick and build on that.
Just sayin'...

As a "funny" side note, can you really see any kind of contractor, hair dresser, oriental nail lady, lawn care guy etc. sitting there and setting all of this up, not to mention forking up $2,300+? Some like to down a few brewskis at the end of the day, others goes home to their family life after picking up the kids from pre-school and others just do not have this kind of money but badly need marketing.
Food for thought, Eva

Very few businesses would attempt to use the EDDM.
And NONE of them will think,,,,, "GEE,,,,, if I just had 15 more businesses joined together, that would really drop the price".
So, 95% won't bother with it.
And we can beat the prices on all 100% plus we do all the work,, providing them a "Valuable" service as a "time saver".
a new pitch:
"Hey Mr. Bizz Owner, go ahead and take the family to Disney World,, enjoy your vacation,,,, we'll drive customers in your doors
while you're in Florida and drunk out of your mind".
something like that LOL
